Peckham Space’s FREE Art Clubs invite young people from Peckham, London, SE15 to take part in art activities during school holiday periods.

Alongside interactive exhibitions, we run tutor-led workshops exploring different art methods and materials, from collage to drawing to mono-printing. This free resource is available to everyone, but is especially popular with young people and their parents who are keen to get involved fun activities during the day when they’re not at school. We have previously run Art Clubs during the Easter holidays which were attended by almost 900 people. There has been such huge demand for them that we will be running them again during August, and would love to continue at Christmas too.

Peckham Space is London’s newest purpose-built art venue which opened in June 2010 with a new approach to commissioning, making and exhibiting art. Peckham Space is an arts organisation that is part of Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. When not providing free Art Clubs, we run an artistic programme which commissions artists to create new work in response to working with residents and young people from Peckham, to encourage progression routes for young people into creative higher education as well as increase access to cultural and educational activity in Peckham, London SE15.

Statement:
Jewellery for me is an art form; I see jewellery as wearable sculpture, a means to explore form, to ask questions and present challenges, to soothe the senses or to awaken them.

The making process requires focus; at every stage in the development of a piece of jewellery, challenges arise and choices must be made. The process requires a fluid approach; each problem arising equally presents opportunity. The final outcome charts this evolving relationship between the idea, the choices made, the application of process, and the behaviour of the material. With a successful piece of jewellery these elements find accord.

Vicky has exhibited work extensively in the UK and abroad through various specialist galleries (Electrum, Lesley Craze, Flow, ProArte Monaco and many more). Much of her work is made to commission and her clients include numerous notable private collectors

For two nights only on Fridays 8 and 15 July the work of South London Women Artists (SLWA) will be on show at Bespoke Space, Blackwater Court in East Dulwich. In an homage to the Royal Academy’s Summer Show SLWA are staging their own exhibition albeit on a more bijou scale. The SLWA Summer Show will be hung in traditional salon style to infuse the space with life and energy – an energy that will continue during the week as dance and yoga classes take place surrounded by the work.

There will be a launch event on Friday 8 July with talks by the participating artists about their work from a range of disciplines including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media. On Friday 15 July the end of show party will celebrate South London Women Artists and their achievements.

South London Women Artists aims to celebrate and promote female artists through its inspirational online portfolio at www.southlondonwomenartists.co.uk. It now has a membership of over 100 artists, a successful track record of exhibiting and a growing reputation for community projects with local schools.

My works are about our times and taking a fresh look at things. Mostly, I get inspired by contemporary life and visual media and paint in a televisual style to emphasise this. I use new world tools including my computer and photography to help me imagine my work before I put brush to canvas.

New perspectives on traditional images, spirituality, illusion, light, politics and consumerism have all been subject of my work so far. Then, it’s for people to decide if it means something to them and if they want to live with it – this is what I live for.

Artist Statement:
Jane’s training as a Graphic Designer is evident in her work through her love of colour, shape and rhythm. She moves between being purely non-referential to careful analytical observations of London scenes and interiors. More recently she has been inspired not only by the landscapes to be found in London, but also from her trips abroad. Through her unique vision she simplifies her observations into colourful geometric shapes, often incorporating her motif the stripe, but not always. Josef Albers and Bridget Riley are a great source of inspiration.

Art has always been at the root of all Jane’s career decisions. She originally trained as a Primary School teacher at Brighton College of Education. She chose Teaching because of the opportunities of working with children creatively through Art. Wanting to work more in the world of Art she took a degree in Graphic Design at Kingston Polytechnic. This resulted in working as a Graphic Designer for Minale, Tattersfield and Partners, a top international design group in London. A further interest led to a foundation course at the Byam Shaw School of Art, after which she studied Fine Art at Cheltenham College of Art.
Jane has a studio in Lavender Hill, Battersea, London and has become involved in exhibiting in group shows including the Battersea Contemporary Arts Fair, the Contemporary Print Show at the Barbican, Fresh Art and On the Wall at Olympia.
Jane has also worked on several commissions for a property company in London and a Pharmaceutical company in the Middle East.
In 2007 she co-curated a collaborative print show with the Southbank Printmakers and printmakers from the Palatinate, Germany, which was held in Landau and was a great success.
In 2009 Jane was elected chair of Southbank Printmakers.

Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Bicentenary Year Exhibition got off to a great start for members of the South London Women Artists. Not only did 15 of its members have work selected for the exhibition, but four of them won prizes!
For those not familiar with SLWA, it is an affiliation of just over 100 women artists who between them produce a great variety of contemporary art. Art strong enough to win First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize and the Deborah Roslund Purchase Prize. What a fabulous endorsement of the SLWA!
First Prize was won by Edori Fertig with her evocative pencil on paper drawing of ‘Voyage’. Edori entered three drawings, ‘expecting to get one token piece in and when I found out that I got the three in I was overjoyed. When, later, I read that I had won, I had to read and reread the message many times for it to sink in. It’s so nice to be acknowledged. I have been feeling like I need a push lately to get on with a body of work and this will surely help.’
Second Prize was for an intriguing drawing by Julia McKenzie: ‘Urchin’. Julia, a long-time Friend of the gallery, describes it as a ‘jewel-like resource in our community. The permanent collection as well as the special exhibitions have always been a real inspiration to me. So, this year, with a bit of encouragement, I decided to submit work. I was delighted when I found out that my drawing, ‘Urchin,’ had won the Second Prize. It feels especially rewarding to be given a prize in the area in which I live and in a gallery that I love.’ Julia is a comparative newcomer to SLWA. ‘As a new member, it has made me very aware that I am part of something really remarkable and probably unstoppable!’
Winner of the Third Prize is Yours Truly: Joan Byrne (author of this piece). Like the other prize winners, I was truly surprised and immensely grateful for the endorsement. I submitted two pieces of work, hoping that one would please the judges. I felt like a winner when both were selected. Then, the following day when I was informed that my photograph — ‘Man in a White Suit — had won Third Prize, I was practically on the ceiling. I almost didn’t enter the exhibition as I found it rather daunting but a seed was planted when some months ago South London Women Artists announced the upcoming exhibition… and, so, I gave it a go. And what a thrill to share (22 April-8 May) gallery space with the likes of Rembrandt, Poussin, Gainsborough…
Another delighted SLWA member is Lesley O’Mara. She won The Purchase Prize, selected by Deborah Roslund, for her painting ‘Le Deluge’. ‘It was so thrilling to get a prize; it’s quite rare to get recognition as an artist,’ she said, ‘and it really does spur you on! We artists are very lucky to be nurtured by such a prestigious gallery. It is a great resource to have on our doorstep . It may be no coincidence that four out of six prize winners were members of South London Women Artists.’ Deborah describes ‘Le Deluge’ as ‘an attempt to fuse abstract and figurative impulses and hopefully give a feel of the lusciousness of paint.’ A wonderfully executed ‘attempt’.
The competition was tough. Three hundred and eighty eight works were submitted of which 133 were selected, among them work by more SLWA members: Ilinca Cantacuzino, Christine Landreth, Kim Thornton, Julie de Greff, Jennifer Merrell, Julia Burnett, Lucy Bainbridge, Susan Wood, Liz Dalton, Eithne Twomey and Fiona Williams.
All in all, as Lesley commented, the work of all these artists demonstrates the strength, beauty and resonance of SLWA.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of Dulwich Picture Gallery and, in particular, the behind-the-scenes work of co-organisers Barbara Richardson and Jane Reid to whom great thanks are due. Thanks, too, to the judges and sponsors.
The Private View was delightful. The sun appeared to shine both inside and outside the gallery. I don’t think I was alone in thinking when I saw the art in the Friends’ Exhibition that we live in a vibrant community. I was also humbled by the standard. It’s very high. So, to be a prize winner, well, it’s just wonderful.

Richard Wilson, Cornelia Parker and Peter Randall-Page will be speaking about their practice at Dulwich Picture Gallery on 1 June, Richard; 8 June, Cornelia; 22 June, Peter; an hour’s illustrated talk with an opportunity afterwards to chat with each of them directly over a coffee. These talks celebrate Dulwich Picture Gallery’s bicentenary in 2011 and its acquisition of Walking the Dog by Peter Randall-Page which stands in the Gallery garden.

This year’s Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House will see South London Women Artists (SLWA) accounting for around one fifth of the participating artists. With in excess of 40 SLWA members showing work in and around Dulwich the organisation will be represented in force.

The Artists’ Open House takes place on two consecutive weekends during the Dulwich Festival, 7-8 May and 14-15 May 2011. Visitors can expect to find a variety of work including painting, photography, sculpture, print, installations and film displayed in homes, studios, workshops, churches and other intriguing venues. There will be two large groups of SLWA members exhibiting at Blackwater Court in East Dulwich and another group at All Saints Church, Rosendale Road, West Dulwich. The Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery launched the fourth biennial exhibition of works by the Friends at their Private View Thurs 21 April.

I investigate the innate properties of a particular palette of materials; exploring archetypal themes and narratives through sculpture, installation and print
My work is both ‘random’ and ‘inevitable’; beautifully slow unfolding manifestations of ritualised ‘making’ that become embodied in vessels, prints and canvases.
I graduated from Camberwell College of Art, London but originally trained as an architect. Perhaps this is the origin of my interest in ‘art’ making ‘place’ and how the body responds to space and object.
I enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with performers: musicians, dancers and poets as well as multi-disciplinary teams of design professionals.
I undertake private commissions for site specific bowls for indoor use.

Monika Kühne JØrgensen is a figurative painter. She combines small, everyday narratives with bigger, social subject matter. Artist Statement:
I focus on the internal frictions of family, relationships and humanity in the everyday – news papers and magazines providing an endless source of anonymous people, celebrities, unbelievable stories of everyday life, uncomfortable histories and dystopic truths. I want to isolate exactly what I have seen in the original image and heighten the inherent energies of the macabre, ethereal and simultaneously the sense of fun. I am interested in questions of identity and the constant, in your face, revaluation of what the human is capable of both in isolation and as a pack, currently and historically.

My work has been described as haunting, unsettling and ultimately emotional but I hope to present work that is both disturbing and beautiful to look at.

Libraries are now under threat, so regular shows at Dulwich Library are especially timely. The panel like the idea of accompanying text as they felt it further enhanced the connection between visual art and the written word.

Artist  Statement:

With an interest in memento mori and how memories can bring to mind our own mortality Paula McGurdy, within her pieces retraces concepts of presence and absence from cradle to grave, aiming to reiterate the ephemeral essence of time. The carefully chosen use of delicate materials such as thread, paper and hair attempts to mirror the above notion of all things transient and thus fragile. Using hair as a metaphor for femininity, growth, time, death and loss it is a reminder of an individuals identity and therefore their mortality, a trace of self removed from a living body, reflecting on the transitory nature of life.

Repetitiveness and laborious work are a particular area of interest to McGurdy as a way of registering time, making time and perhaps even stopping time. Piercing through paper leaves a fragile trace, an impression, of an image taken from a photograph, however it also seems to make these fleeting moments in life more permanent. By using stitch as a form of drawing she aims to trap the memories of the image before they fade, crumble and disappear; the act of making becoming a memory in itself. Employing recurring imagery, the artist seeks to alter the viewers impression by re-purposing and distilling the image and more recently has been examining childhood memories, confronting the viewer with their own ‘lost’ childhood, and therefore their own mortality.

To honour 100 years of the global celebration of International Women’s Day South London Women Artists (SLWA) are holding their 5th exhibition at Dulwich Library from Sunday 27 February to Saturday 26 March 2011. This year the theme of the exhibition is Women and Books, drawing on the invaluable contributions that women have made to books and libraries over the years and the inspiration they receive from them.
SLWA has already been associated with books through it’s progamme of talks also held at Dulwich Library. In 2009 Althea Greenan of the Women’s Art Library at Goldsmith’s College explained how the organisation functions as an alternative public space to view and experience women’s art. Rebecca Fortnum, Camberwell College of Art, talked about her interviews with 20 internationally recognized women artists from her book “Contemporary British Women Artists: In their own words”. More recently Dr Lara Perry who is co-editing a book on feminism and art curating presented her research “What place has feminism in contemporary practice?” to the group.
The Women and Books exhibition will look at books written by women, for women, about women or which inspire women and joins International Women’s Day celebrations on 8 March when thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. Throughout the month long exhibition a number of local schools will attend SLWA education events organized for them by artist members. There will also be free tours of the exhibition led by a SLWA member and a chance to meet some of the participating artists on Wednesdays 2 and 16 March at 3.30pm.
Over the past two years South London Women Artists have staged numerous shows including a hugely successful exhibition at Bankside Gallery in 2010. Dulwich Library is fast becoming an established venue to view and buy original SLWA artworks and the group is delighted that books will also be the theme of the show. The works will ‘bookend’ the library bookshelves, thus connecting the thoughtful experiences of library browsing and art contemplation.
The exhibition will take place at Dulwich Library from 27 February to 26 March during normal opening hours and entrance is free. There will be a private view on Thursday 3 March from 8 to 10pm.

Artist Statement:

Early religious Icon painting and American abstract colour field painting from the 1950′s onwards are a major influence in my work. I use my hands, sponges or sprays to work over the canvas with a variety of old techniques and contemporary materials – gesso, acrylic paint, glitter, raw pigment and gold leaf. Layers of paint, pigment or glitter glide the surface until I arrive at a point of conclusion. This can take several months as often I re-work the paintings until I feel satisfied that they have reached the right pitch. I know when I have achieved my goal when there is a visual fluidity of movement, combined with a constant state of flux within the frame. My paintings have to sing to me.

My most recent feature was in The Transmitter Crystal Palace Triangle Art Trail in an art pullout special in the June 2010 edition, which featured an article on my work and practice. I exhibited 3 paintings at La Bruschetta in Crystal Palace, one painting of which is currently held in a permanent exhibition there.

Artist’s Statement:
I am inspired by the psycho-geography of urban environments: details that are familiar but uncelebrated; land earmarked for demolition and redevelopment; echoes of industry and trade. My work explores landscapes in transition and the layering of time through the built environment. More recently I have worked with details from nature, particularly those that echo the structures in the built environment.

I use a mixture of photography, collage and drawing, which I screenprint using photo stencils. I produce small runs of prints and handprint each one. I enjoy layering and amalgamating my drawings and photographs through the process of printing. For me, a transformation occurs at the printing table; my drawings and photos metamorphose into fully realized works.

I am largely self taught. I work as a Dyslexia tutor, assessing and supporting people with Dyslexia in further education colleges in London. In 2006 – 2008 I attended three short courses in screen printing at Camberwell College of Art. I 2008 I rented a studio at Art Hub [www.arthub1.org] and I have been learning as I go, ever since.

SLWA has forged a strong bond with Dulwich Library over the last couple of years with the library hosting four SLWA exhibitions during this time, the most recent one finishing at the end of November.

Each show has seen SLWA grow and develop and this latest exhibition has been a resounding success with several sales and great feedback from library users and visitors to the exhibition alike. Sale successes went to both friends of artists and to people off the street

The show was curated by Emily Druiff who, with her team of helpers hung the 46 works with flare and the military precision needed to get the job done in the short time between the work arriving at the library and the library opening to the public two hours later.

The Private View on November 3rd was a festive occasion with lots of wine and delicious canapés. The atmosphere was friendly and the artists mingled with regular supporters and lots of delighted first time newcomers, several of whom are following SLWA on the website and on our Facebook site. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening and there were many comments about the high quality of the work alongside the surprisingly accessible prices!

Many of you will not know that along with visitors and library users we have some very special guests looking at our artworks. For the last three shows SLWAs have invited local schools to bring pupils to the exhibition. This year Chiara Perini worked with year 5 children from Heber School and from St John’s and St Clements Schools, two hours in class preparation talking, thinking and drawing about ‘who am I’ followed by a visit to the exhibition to talk with some of our artists about their work. Their comments were delightful, thought provoking, and make such participation really worthwhile:

It was really interesting and fun because you don’t usually hear artists talk about their work and I hardly ever see pictures

It was really cool listening to famous artists and I loved the work they did. It really helps me to do some more drawings. And it is not all about is it good, if it is rubbish you may change it good

Surprising but very interesting and I liked it lots and lots

The library shows are fast becoming something of a tradition in Dulwich and many people now pop in to view and buy work by local artists.

If you missed the exhibition this time don’t worry you will get another chance. Plans are currently underway for the next Library show scheduled for March 2011 to coincide with Southwark’s ‘Celebrating Women Month’. For SLWAs note the next Call for Artists is 7 January.

For potential friends and buyers make a note in your diary now, the Private View will be on Thursday 3 March – we hope a more convenient date than our previous Wednesday PVs. So be sure not to miss what promises to be another rich, diverse and exciting body of work from the growing band of talented South London Women Artists’.

My work is primarily drawing based layered with paper cuts and collage. I also produce prints.I am interested in drawing and recording what I can find in my immediate environment. I look for the evidence of nature I can hold in my hand from my suburban garden to what I can find on my travels to the sea or the countryside.I am interested in natural forms that have been eroded, buffeted and broken down.

I look for the imperfect that exposes complex structures and core elements. I like residues and husks of animals, plants or minerals that have survived long enough for us to find and examine. I seek out the overlooked and the imperfect and try to convey the beauty I see there.

Statement and CV:
Beginning with nocturnal images of London, transformed into chaotic, meticulous and timeless fantasies, the work presented here has an immersive quality. Repetitiously dissecting and reconstructing the composition, the relationship between image and pattern is explored. Isolating and abandoning reality, the connection to what may have once seemed ordinary and everyday is given a sense of importance and permanence. There is tension between reality and fiction, where the real and familiar becomes bizarre, dreamlike and staged.There is a deliberate intent to make the subject cinematic, through an atmospheric depiction of social landscapes.

Having studied painting at The Royal Academy Schools and previously Winchester School of Art, Bella has been involved in many group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. The British Council showed her work in New Delhi, India in 2004. Other solo shows have included exhibitions at The Curwen and New Academy Gallery, ROSL Arts, London/Edinburgh and recently The Medici Gallery.

 Recent group shows include The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Threadneedle Prize, Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. Over the years Bella’s work has been supported through awards and sponsorship from corporate and private funding bodies including Sir Ernest Cassell Award; ROSL Arts, UK travel scholarship; MacFarlane Walker Trust; The Gen Foundation; Worshipful Company of Painter/Stainers; Leverhulme Scholarship and the recent Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Purchase Prize. These in turn have enabled her to travel to Japan and India to make new work and contacts. She has also recently been elected ARWS. Bella’s work has been purchased for many public and private collections. She has also been involved in commission-based work. Existing clients include Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, BMW, Rover Group, M&G Ltd, Tesco, Royal Academy of Arts, Arts Review and ROSL Arts collection. 

Bella has also been featured in various publications including the Financial Times, Sunday Times, Evening Standard, Arts Review, RA magazine, Daily Express and Hindustan Times.

Artist’s Statement:

I am currently making work about Interspecies communication: dialogue between different species of animals, particularly birds of prey and humans. Fascinated by the relationship between stillness and motion and how humans perceive the difference, I find projection and film provide fertile grounds for enquiry. Having recently graduated in Time Based Media I am keen to develop my Super 8 portfolio and to rekindle my love affair with printmaking, and to develop my casting skills. Previous work focused on re-presenting
historical perspectives and providing opportunities for surfacing secrets. My passions? anything I am researching, and research itself. The Constructivists, film, and art made in revolutionary contexts.

Artists Statement:

Visually my work encompasses a fascination with Victorian taxidermy, focusing particularly on insects and touching upon narrative created by JG Ballard’s short stories. My current work is the culmination of the last 9 years loosely focusing on the short story ‘The Screen Game’ where the female protagonist is guarded and trailed by her bejeweled insects. These ‘pets’ which both protect and burden her have provided me with a subject that is both fascinating for its study of these creatures as well as attending to the idea that they could visualise personal demons.
I work from my own assortment of gathered insects, both donated and found as well as visiting the Natural History Museums, Angela Marmont Centre, where many of the specimens date back to Darwin’s original collections.

Born in 1980 in Germany , Laura New is a London based contemporary artist who has been working as a painter since finishing her degree in Fine Art in 2003. Artist statement + CV:

Working site-specifically for the most part, my practice both evolves from and responds to the context and topography of a given space. My ideas are on a constant collision course between respecting a site’s history and narrative and the urge to re-invent them. I explore the realm between truth and fiction through storylines and image-making; dismantling myths and re-assembling them for my own aesthetic convenience.

I work across a variety of media: from paintings and objects to film and text. In Scrutinium, a fictional archive, I made up and screen printed a newspaper unravelling a story which I “documented”, this multilayered installation included painted portraits, found materials and texts.

I am trained in Fine Art, Architecture and Graphic Design, these inter-related disciplines both influence and inform my practice. I believe art should satisfy the observer as well as the thinker; therefore I use my world of connotations and references as an aesthetic catalyst for the visual outcome. In Brixton Princess I present myself in a classical portrait, alongside a video piece of me rewind-braiding my own hair in a Caribbean style, commenting on cultural unification.

I examine the artist’s function and moral obligations towards the audience: Should I deliver true stories so that my viewers trust me? I am fascinated by the ability to influence the audience and direct them, physically and mentally, thus organically including them in the work.

‘What place has feminism in contemporary practice?’

Dr Lara Perry is the leader of a Leverhulme-funded international research network on ‘Transnational perspectives on feminism, women’s art and curating’. She is co-editing a book on feminism and art curating, forthcoming from Liverpool University Press.

Art Dog has organised a show of their SLWA at Tres Chelsea, Come along to view the Art, meet the Artists and enjoy the lovely river view.

On the morning of October 13th the selection panel met to choose the work for the fourth SLWA exhibition to be held  at Dulwich Library. It took Emily Druiff, Mella Shaw and Maria Chevska more than two hours to view over 130 images and choose the final 46 pieces to be displayed. By lunchtime the final decisions had been made and the work will be on show in the library from 31st October until 27th  November.

Autumn Salon 2010 explores boundaries whilst enabling the artists to retain their roots. The show deals with merging and reconciling cultures and identities through tradition and language. Autumn Salon is organized by EU-MAN: international group of artists working and living in the EU.

Tamar Lev-On is a Brixton based artist working with Mixed media, from painting and sculpting to film and text. Trained in Fine Art, Architecture and Graphic Design, she is inspired by all fields and blends them all in her work.

Her latest projects mainly explore the realm between truth and fiction. She examines the artist’s place and moral obligations towards her audience through narratives and imaging.
